About the Manufacturer
Founded in Schiltach by Otto Johannes Grohe or ‘Clever Hans’, hansgrohe has grown
from humble family beginnings in the heart of the Black Forest to a household name
synonymous with bathroom design and comfort. The life of Clever Hans is a success
story that has taken on a lore of it’s own illustrating the precision and spirit of
German design-manufacture - at it’s finest.
After establishment as a manufacture of brass goods, Hans Grohe quickly developed
into a shower specialist and pioneer in the German sanitation industry. Starting in
1928, his hand shower evolved into a convenient alternative to the then-customary
overhead shower. His shapes and ideas remained influential for modern shower technology
for several decades. Even at age 82, the company founder made a pioneering invention:
the wallbar. This enabled the hand shower to be attached at the desired height for the
first time. In 1955, eldest son Hans Grohe Junior took over leadership of the firm.
The year 2000 saw another leap in the company's approach to bathroom installation with the introduction of the ibox.
